STUDENT SUPPORT

As Germany's national supercomputing institution, GCS is committed to encourage a wide variety of activities that help promote up and coming experts in the field of high-performance computing (HPC). One of these activities are the Student Cluster Competition (SCC) events which have regularly been scheduled as multiple-day live events during the world’s largest gatherings of the HPC community: (1) the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis “Supercomputing Conference” (SC), held annually in the United States, and (2) the European counterpart of this event, the “International Supercomputing Conference“ (ISC), which is held earlier each year, in late spring, in Germany,

The Student Cluster Competition encourages international teams of university students to showcase their expertise in a friendly yet spirited competition that fosters critical skills, professional relationships, competitive spirit and lifelong comraderies.

In 2020, GCS is pleased to support three German teams of undergraduate students participating in the Student Cluster Competition (SCC) at the annual International Supercomputing Conference (ISC 2020 Digital). The teams representing

Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU),
University of Hamburg (UHH),
and
Heidelberg University (UHD)

are among the 14 participants qualified for the contest. Other competitors come from China, Indonesia, Lithuania, Poland, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, and the U.K.

GCS sponsored a team “deFAUlt”, consisting of six undergraduate students representing the

Friedrich-Alexander University, Erlangen-Nuremberg

for the Student Cluster Competition at SC19 in Denver, Colorado

GCS sponsored two team of undergraduate students representing

University of Hamburg
and
Heidelberg University

for the Student Cluster Competition at ISC18 in Frankfurt/Germany

GCS sponsored a team of six undergraduate students representing

Friedrich-Alexander University, Erlangen-Nuremberg

for the Student Cluster Competition at SC18 in Dallas, Texas

GCS has sponsored SCC teams for four consecutive years in order to encourage students to take a deeper interest in HPC and develop more HPC skills in Germany. This is the first time GCS has helped three German teams participate in the student competition being held in line with the International Supercomputing Conference in Frankfurt/Main, Germany:

Friedrich-Alexander University, Erlangen-Nuremberg
Hamburg University
Heidelberg University

In 2017, GCS supported a multi institution Bavarian student team, representing

Friedrich-Alexander University, Erlangen-Nuremberg
and
Technical University Munich

which qualified to participate in the Student Cluster Competition (SCC) at SC18 in Denver, Colorado.

Team “FAUboyzz” represented the Friedrich-Alexander Universät Erlangen Nürnberg (FAU) at ISC17. The multi-disciplinary team consisted of six students studying computational engineering, computer science and medical engineering at FAU.

In 2016, GCS supported two German undergraduate teams who were accepted for the 2016 Student Cluster Competition, a 48-hour challenge held on the SC16 showground in Salt Lake City, Utah:

Team deFAUlt of Friedrich-Alexander University, Erlangen-Nuremberg
and
Team PhiClub of Technical University Munich

In 2015, GCS acted as sponsor for a team of undergraduate students of Technische Universität Munich participating in the  2015 Student Cluster Competition (SCC) held on the SC15 showground in Austin, TX. Team TUMuch Phun (pronounced: too much fun) was the only European representative among the nine teams qualifying for the annually recurring competition at SC
